A dramatic warning from a coalition of Northern youth groups has stirred fresh controversy in Nigeria’s political landscape, raising concerns about governance, democracy, and the nation’s future ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a press briefing, the Coalition of Arewa Youth Groups called for the immediate release of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who it said is being held by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The group also urged Northern youths to unite politically and vote against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.

The coalition’s most striking claim was its assertion that “2027 may be Nigeria’s last election” if current trends continue. The statement reflects the group’s opinion and political concerns rather than an established fact, but it has nonetheless intensified public discussion about the country’s democratic trajectory.

Representatives of the coalition argued that El-Rufai’s continued detention contrasts with the treatment of other former governors who have faced investigations yet remain active in politics. They claimed this perceived disparity raises questions about fairness and equal application of the law.

The group also criticized what it described as efforts to weaken political competition in Kaduna State, alleging attempts to create a one-party environment. It maintained that the arrest or detention of political figures would not deter its campaign objectives or alter its political strategy for the 2027 elections.

The ICPC and other relevant authorities have their own legal processes and responsibilities, and allegations or criticisms directed at public institutions remain matters of public debate unless determined by a competent court or supported by official findings.

As Nigeria moves closer to another election season, statements from political groups, activists, and public figures are expected to shape national conversations. Whether the coalition’s warning gains wider traction or remains a rhetorical political message, it has added another layer of intensity to discussions surrounding democracy, accountability, and electoral competition.
