Hopes of Rescue Fade as Security Agencies Intensify Search for Former Defence Spokesman’s Remains
A wave of shock and grief has swept across Nigeria’s security community following reports that retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, has been killed by bandits after weeks in captivity.
The retired senior military officer was abducted alongside his wife on May 30 while travelling through the Matazu axis of Katsina State, an area that has witnessed recurring attacks by armed criminal groups in recent years.
For weeks, family members, colleagues, and security authorities held onto hopes that the respected military veteran would be rescued alive. Those hopes, however, appear to have been shattered by the latest reports emerging from Katsina State.
The Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu Danmusa, confirmed that security authorities had received intelligence indicating that the retired general was killed by his captors.
According to Danmusa, security agencies are currently working to verify details surrounding the incident and recover the remains of the former military officer.
“Security authorities had received information indicating that the retired military officer was killed by his abductors,” the commissioner reportedly stated.
Despite the grim development, officials disclosed that efforts are still ongoing to locate and recover the body, while security operatives continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The reported death of Major General Abubakar has reignited concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of Northern Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom and bandit attacks continue to threaten lives and livelihoods.
As a former Director of Defence Information, Abubakar played a prominent role in communicating military operations and security matters during his years of service. His abduction had attracted nationwide attention due to his military background and longstanding contributions to national security.
The incident has also raised fresh questions about the growing boldness of criminal groups operating across several communities despite ongoing military and security operations.
While authorities continue their search and investigation, many Nigerians are mourning the loss of a man who spent decades serving the nation in uniform.
For now, uncertainty remains over the exact circumstances of his reported death, and security agencies are expected to provide further updates as operations continue in the area.
