Fresh Political Prediction Raises Questions About the Future of Nigeria’s Fast-Growing Opposition Party

A new political prediction by former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has sparked debate over the future stability of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with claims that Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso could eventually walk away from the party if their expectations are not met.

The statement comes at a time when the NDC is battling internal disagreements following its controversial primary elections, raising concerns about unity within one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing opposition movements.

In a post shared on his verified X account, Ahmad suggested that both Obi and Kwankwaso view the NDC primarily as a platform to pursue their immediate electoral ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections rather than as a long-term political project.

According to him, the ambitions of the party’s key figures may not align indefinitely, particularly when compared with what he described as the broader vision of NDC National Leader, Seriake Dickson.

“If Obi and Kwankwaso’s expectations are not realised within the party, they will definitely move on to another platform ahead of 2031,” Ahmad wrote.

His remarks have added a fresh layer of speculation to ongoing conversations about the future direction of the opposition party. While Obi and Kwankwaso remain central figures within the NDC, recent internal disputes have already generated concerns about factional interests, candidate selections, and long-term party cohesion.

Ahmad argued that Dickson appears focused on building a sustainable political structure capable of competing beyond a single election cycle. In contrast, he suggested that Obi and Kwankwaso are primarily focused on achieving their short-term electoral objectives.

The former presidential aide went further to speculate that Dickson may be laying the foundation for a future presidential ambition, possibly positioning himself for a major role in the 2031 political landscape.

The comments have triggered mixed reactions among political observers. Some view Ahmad’s prediction as a realistic assessment of Nigerian political realignments, where alliances often shift based on evolving interests. Others argue that the NDC’s strength depends on its ability to accommodate diverse political actors while maintaining a common vision.

For now, neither Obi nor Kwankwaso has responded publicly to the claims. However, with internal tensions already attracting national attention, Ahmad’s remarks are likely to fuel further debate about whether the NDC is building a lasting political movement or merely a temporary coalition ahead of 2027.
