Former Sokoto Deputy Governor Says President Is Losing Sleep Over Nigeria’s Security Challenges
As Nigerians continue to grapple with kidnappings, banditry, terrorism, and violent attacks across several parts of the country, a startling revelation from former Sokoto State Deputy Governor Mukhtar Shagari has reignited discussions about the nation’s worsening security situation.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Shagari disclosed that President Bola Tinubu is deeply troubled by the state of insecurity and hardly sleeps because of the responsibility of protecting millions of Nigerians.
The remark comes at a time when concerns over security remain one of the biggest issues confronting the administration, with citizens demanding stronger action against criminal groups operating across the country.
According to Shagari, the President is fully aware of the fears and frustrations many Nigerians face daily and is committed to addressing the challenges. However, he emphasized that solving the security crisis cannot be left to the Federal Government alone.
“The President hardly sleeps easy because of the security situation,” Shagari stated, stressing that Tinubu remains deeply concerned about the safety of citizens.
The former deputy governor argued that state governments must play a more active role in supporting ongoing security efforts. He pointed out that every state already receives security votes and suggested that such resources could be better utilized to strengthen local security structures, including the establishment of state police.
His comments have added fresh momentum to the ongoing debate surrounding state policing, a proposal that has generated both support and opposition across political and security circles.
For years, advocates of state police have argued that local authorities are better positioned to respond quickly to security threats within their jurisdictions. Critics, however, have expressed concerns about potential political abuse and operational challenges.
Shagari insisted that protecting lives and property should remain a national priority regardless of political differences. He noted that Nigerians deserve to travel freely, conduct their businesses without fear, and sleep peacefully in their homes.
As insecurity continues to dominate public discourse, Shagari’s remarks raise an important question: can stronger collaboration between the Federal Government and state authorities finally deliver the lasting security Nigerians have long demanded?
With public patience increasingly being tested, many citizens will be watching closely to see whether new approaches can turn concern into tangible results.
