Nollywood Stars’ Show of Support Sparks Heated Debate as Nigerians Clash Over Government Performance
Veteran Nollywood actor Zack Orji has found himself at the center of a growing social media storm after leading a solidarity rally in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja.
The event, organized by the Re-elect Tinubu For Inclusive Nigeria (RTIFN) movement under the theme, “Relax, Tinubu Is Fixing Nigeria,” was intended to highlight the administration’s achievements in infrastructure, economic reforms, and security. However, what began as a show of political support quickly transformed into a heated online debate that has captured national attention.
Orji, who serves as the Deputy Director-General of the movement, joined other Nollywood personalities and supporters in calling on Nigerians to back President Tinubu’s reform agenda ahead of the 2027 general elections. Participants at the rally also appealed for stronger efforts to tackle kidnapping and insecurity, issues that continue to worry many citizens.
Before the rally, organizers conducted a medical outreach program that reportedly provided free healthcare services, consultations, treatments, and medications to hundreds of residents, particularly low-income earners.
Despite these efforts, social media users shifted their focus to videos and photographs showing Orji during the march. The veteran actor appeared physically frail and walked at a slower pace, prompting widespread reactions online.
Critics questioned why celebrities would publicly endorse the administration at a time when many Nigerians continue to grapple with rising living costs, inflation, and insecurity. Several social media users accused entertainers of prioritizing political interests over the concerns of ordinary citizens.
Others described the rally as a public relations exercise, arguing that the economic realities faced by many households contradict claims that significant progress has been achieved.
However, not everyone shared that view. Supporters of the rally defended the actors, insisting that public figures have the constitutional right to support political leaders and causes they believe in without facing personal attacks or harassment.
The controversy highlights the increasingly influential role celebrities play in Nigeria’s political conversations. As public trust in political institutions remains divided, endorsements from entertainers often generate intense reactions, sometimes overshadowing the message they intend to promote.
With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the debate surrounding Zack Orji and the Abuja rally underscores the deep political divisions that continue to shape discussions about governance, economic reforms, and the future direction of the country.
