Lagos APC Tension Rises as Aspirant Rejects Consensus Rumours Ahead of Primary Showdown
Political tension is building within the All Progressives Congress in Lagos as governorship aspirant Lanre Jim-Kamal has dismissed reports suggesting that a preferred candidate has already emerged ahead of Thursday’s governorship primary election.
With expectations rising over who will eventually fly the party’s flag, Jim-Kamal insisted there is no officially endorsed candidate and urged party members to participate in what he described as a transparent and fair process.
Speaking during the unveiling of his five-point agenda in Lagos, the aspirant argued that internal democracy should remain the foundation of party politics and warned against any arrangement capable of creating division within the party.
According to him, the recently signed Electoral Act reflects support for direct primaries and discourages the culture of imposing candidates on party members.
Jim-Kamal urged delegates participating in the governorship primary to vote based on competence and conscience rather than political pressure.
“I urge delegates to open their eyes and vote for the person that will lead us well,” he stated.
The Lagos governorship hopeful also appealed for peaceful conduct during the primary exercise, saying Lagos should demonstrate political maturity and set an example for the rest of the country.
Attention has also shifted to growing reports surrounding Obafemi Hamzat, who has been linked with claims of receiving backing from members of the party’s Governorship Advisory Council (GAC).
However, Jim-Kamal rejected claims that Hamzat had secured a consensus endorsement, alleging that only five members of the council supported him and insisting there was no official agreement within the party.
He further argued that if there were truly a consensus candidate, there would be no need for extensive consultations and political mobilization currently taking place.
As the APC primary approaches, political observers believe the outcome could shape the future direction of Lagos politics and determine how internal democracy within the party is perceived.
With rival camps intensifying efforts behind the scenes, the battle for Lagos may be entering a decisive stage.
