Political Tension Builds in Abia as APC Chieftain Predicts Abaribe’s Senate Exit
Fresh political tension is brewing in Abia State ahead of the 2027 elections after APC chieftain Paul Ikonne declared that Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe will not return to the Senate.
Ikonne, who recently announced his own senatorial ambition, claimed that many constituents in Abia South have allegedly grown dissatisfied with Abaribe’s long stay in the National Assembly, accusing the veteran lawmaker of failing to deliver enough developmental projects to the district despite spending nearly two decades in the Senate.
According to Ikonne, Abia South remains one of the most economically important regions in the Southeast because of Aba’s position as a major commercial hub and the area’s contribution to oil production within Abia State. However, he argued that the district has little visible development to justify Abaribe’s long tenure.
The APC chieftain stated that political discussions within the district suggest many residents are now prepared for a change in representation ahead of the next election cycle. His comments have already sparked reactions among political supporters and observers within the state.
Ikonne also made a bold political prediction regarding the presidency, expressing confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would secure re-election in 2027. He further argued that after Tinubu’s second term, power would eventually rotate to the Southeast for a full eight-year presidency.
The comments are expected to intensify political conversations within Abia and the wider Southeast as politicians begin positioning for future elections and regional power negotiations.
Senator Abaribe remains one of the most prominent political figures from the Southeast and has built a strong reputation over the years through his outspoken positions on national issues. However, with fresh challengers emerging and political alignments shifting, analysts believe the 2027 Senate race in Abia South could become one of the region’s most closely watched contests.
As political campaigns quietly begin to gather momentum, many voters are now asking whether Abaribe’s long-standing influence will survive another electoral battle or if a new political era is about to emerge in Abia South.
