Game-Changer: INEC and NIMC Join Forces to Link NIN with Voter Registration Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to harmonize identity and voter registration processes across Nigeria.

Speaking in Abuja, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu described the collaboration as a transformative step for Nigeria’s democracy, noting that both agencies manage the country’s largest biometric databases—INEC for elections and NIMC for citizenship identification.

The partnership, unveiled during a joint press conference with NIMC Director-General Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, will integrate the National Identification Number (NIN) into future Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercises.

This was disclosed in a statement on the NIMC X handle on Wednesday.

According to Coker-Odusote, the integration will ensure that every eligible voter is uniquely verified, strengthen voter authentication, and protect Nigeria’s electoral integrity.

She emphasized that NIMC is committed to providing INEC with secure and verifiable identity data, in line with global best practices and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

This alliance is expected to reduce voter fraud, eliminate multiple registrations, and usher in a more credible electoral process in Nigeria.
