Police in Kamba town, Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State, have arrested a 20-year-old woman, Maryam Atiku, for allegedly burying her newborn baby girl alive in a bush.
According to the Kebbi State Police Command, Maryam tied the baby’s neck with wrappers, gagged her mouth, and buried her in a shallow grave at Malam Yaro bush.
The infant’s life was miraculously saved when farmer Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad noticed suspicious freshly dug soil. He alerted residents, who exhumed the baby alive and rushed her to Kamba General Hospital, where doctors confirmed her condition as stable.
Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect confessed to the crime after detectives launched an investigation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, condemned the shocking act, vowing to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against child abuse, exploitation, and gender-based violence across Kebbi State.
