A troubling rumor is circulating online that about 2 million Benin Republic nationals are being positioned to vote in parts of Nigeria such as Lagos, Abuja, and Ibadan.

And naturally, many Nigerians are asking:

How is that even possible?
Can foreigners legally vote in Nigeria?
Would that not amount to election fraud?

Let us be very clear from the start:

Foreign nationals are not legally allowed to vote in Nigerian elections.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a voter in Nigeria must be a citizen of Nigeria, at least 18 years old, and properly registered in the official voters’ register. INEC’s own voter guidelines also state that voter registration is specifically for Nigerian citizens resident in the country.

So legally speaking, a Benin Republic national cannot lawfully register and vote in Nigeria unless that person is actually a Nigerian citizen who merely lives near or across the border.

That is the legal position.

Now, could foreigners still end up in the system illegally?

That is the real fear behind this rumor.

Because while the law is clear, Nigerians are not just worried about the law — they are worried about enforcement, border weakness, identity abuse, compromised registration, and political desperation.

And that fear is not irrational.

In a country where elections already struggle with trust, the idea that foreign nationals could be smuggled into voter registration or mobilized for political use immediately sounds like what it would be:

electoral sabotage.

Not democracy.

Not participation.

Not inclusion.

Sabotage.

Even more revealing is this: even Nigerians living abroad still do not have full operational diaspora voting rights unless the legal framework is specifically amended and implemented, which INEC itself has repeatedly acknowledged. If many Nigerians outside the country cannot simply vote by default, then it would be absurd — and unlawful — for non-Nigerians to do so.

So who should Nigerians hold responsible if such a thing is ever attempted?

The answer is simple:

INEC, security agencies, political actors, and anyone involved in voter registration fraud.

Because if foreigners are ever deliberately inserted into Nigeria’s electoral process, that would not just be an election issue.

It would be a national sovereignty scandal.

And if Nigeria cannot protect who votes in its elections, then democracy itself becomes vulnerable to manipulation.

That is why this rumor must not just be mocked or ignored.

It must be investigated, verified, and aggressively prevented.

Because if foreigners ever decide Nigeria’s future at the ballot, then Nigerians would have every right to say the system was no longer merely weak.

It was hijacked.
