Festus Okere, Chairman of the World Igbo Congress (WIC), on Wednesday, urged President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
He described Kanu as a “freedom fighter for democracy.”
Okere made the call during his address at the WIC Congress in Boston, Massachusetts, stressing that Kanu’s release would restore a genuine sense of inclusion for the Igbo people.
“Your Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, World Igbo Congress… join the World to appeal to you to release our son, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Courts, at home and abroad, have declared him innocent and unlawfully renditioned.
Your history as a fighter for democracy is well known. Releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would cement that legacy for the Igbos,” Okere declared.
He further urged the Igbos to remain proud of their identity and heritage.
“This is not just the cry of a cock. It is the call of history. Not merely a sound that announces dawn.
It is a summons to consciousness… And so I say to all Umu Igbo, at home and abroad: Wake up! Time is running out,” he added.
Okere also criticized the exclusion of Igbos from governance since the Biafra civil war, warning, “Our survival as Ndi Igbo in Nigeria is under siege. We must unite to secure our destiny in the face of continued threats.”
He concluded by stressing unity and cultural pride, saying: “The deliberate exclusion of Ndi Igbo from governance remains a deep disregard for our people, despite our huge contributions to Nigeria’s survival and growth.”
