Nigeria Foils Benin Coup Within 12 Hours — Musa Reveals

Nigeria demonstrated its rapid military response by neutralising an attempted coup in the Republic of Benin within just 12 hours, Defence Minister General Christopher Musa (rtd.) disclosed on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics.

Musa revealed that the intervention followed a direct appeal from the President of Benin to President Bola Tinubu, who immediately authorised the operation. Troops moved in swiftly, securing the area the same day.

The attempted coup occurred on a Sunday morning in December 2025 and was completely suppressed by evening. Musa highlighted that the rapid response underscores Nigeria’s growing military capacity and its commitment to regional stability.

“The incident shows the kind of capabilities we have and why it’s important to build our own strength to secure our country and Africa as a whole,” Musa said, noting that troops were only being withdrawn after the area was fully secured.

This operation demonstrates Nigeria’s strategic role in West African security and the importance of regional cooperation between neighbouring states.
