January Woes: Obi Says Insecurity, Poverty, Power Crisis Deepen

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described January as a troubling start to the year for Nigeria, warning that insecurity, poverty, education failures, and power supply challenges worsened significantly.

In a statement shared on his verified X account, Obi said the month exposed the depth of Nigeria’s struggles, with rising cases of killings, kidnappings, and abductions across the country. He noted that victims included children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers, while ransom demands ran into millions of naira.

According to him, persistent insecurity has kept farmers away from their farms, aggravating food shortages and rural poverty. Obi also raised concerns about education, stressing that millions of children remain out of school, while insecurity and strikes disrupt learning nationwide. He described the situation in Abuja as especially worrying, with schools closed despite heavy public spending on other projects.

On power supply, Obi pointed to two national grid collapses in January, worsening Nigeria’s already poor electricity access. He further criticised what he called misplaced governance priorities, urging leaders to focus on urgent domestic challenges facing Nigerians.
