Genocide Comments Row: PFN Defends INEC Chairman, Rejects Sack Calls

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has firmly rejected calls for the removal of INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, over alleged comments on genocide, describing the demand as unjustified and dangerous to constitutional freedoms.

In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Bishop David Bakare, the PFN said Amupitan’s remarks were made in a personal capacity and had no connection to his official duties or electoral responsibilities. The fellowship stressed that every Nigerian, including public officials, has the right to express views on national issues outside the scope of their office.

PFN warned against punishing officials for personal opinions, noting that elections and INEC activities were not involved in the matter. It also cautioned against interpreting sensitive national issues through religious lenses, saying such actions fuel division and threaten peaceful coexistence.

The fellowship urged restraint, mutual respect and understanding in public discourse, emphasizing that unity and peace must guide responses to national challenges. PFN reaffirmed its commitment to fairness and justice, calling on all stakeholders to uphold democratic values.
