Patients across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory were left stranded on Wednesday as health workers shut primary healthcare centres and general hospitals over an ongoing strike.
The strike, declared by the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), has disrupted public health services and forced many residents to seek costly alternatives far from their communities. JUAC says the action is due to unresolved grievances, alleged breach of trust, and poor welfare treatment by the FCT Administration.
Hospitals in Abaji, Kuje and Kwali recorded hours of waiting with no staff on duty, while patients expressed frustration over missed checkups and prescriptions. Schools and agencies such as AGIS, AEPB and the FCT Water Board have also remained closed since the strike began.
Despite a National Industrial Court order directing workers to resume duties, JUAC has appealed the ruling. The Nigeria Labour Congress has backed the workers, insisting the strike should continue until their demands are addressed.
As tensions rise, residents continue to bear the brunt of the shutdown across the FCT.
