Electoral Act Drama: Ex-INEC Boss Accuses Senate of Delay Tactics

A former top official of the Independent National Electoral Commission has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s electoral reforms. Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, ex-Director of Voter and Publicity Education at INEC, says available evidence suggests the Senate is deliberately slowing down the passage of the Electoral Act.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Osaze-Uzzi warned that the delay could force Nigeria to rely again on the 2022 Electoral Act, which he said contains clear flaws already identified by lawyers, civil society groups and election observers.

He recalled that even the National Assembly once admitted gaps in the law, especially on the issue of statutory delegates, and had attempted amendments close to election periods in the past. According to him, with elections drawing nearer, continued delay risks repeating old mistakes and weakening public confidence in the electoral process.
