The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has condemned Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling it a betrayal of both Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Kano electorates. NNPP National Spokesperson, Ladipo Johnson, told Politics Today on Channels Television that Yusuf’s move disregarded the people who voted the NNPP into power in 2023.
Johnson stressed that the electorate had supported Yusuf through legal battles at the Election Petition Tribunal, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court. By defecting without consulting voters, he said, Yusuf handed power back to those rejected after eight years, undermining public trust.
NNPP Public Relations Officer Ibrahim Karaye described the party as “devastated but strong,” asserting that internal cohesion remained intact despite the governor’s departure. Yusuf formally joined the APC on Monday alongside 22 Kano Assembly members and nine federal lawmakers at a Government House event, claiming the move was aimed at fostering development and reducing political polarisation. The event was attended by top APC leaders, including Abdullahi Ganduje and Barau Jibrin.
The defection signals a major shift in Kano politics, ending the governor’s close alliance with Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya movement.
