Kano State witnessed a major political reshuffle as several commissioners and senior officials resigned following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday. Yusuf described the move as being “in the best interest of the people of Kano State.”
The wave of resignations comes hours after 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly also joined the APC. Among those stepping down are Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Umaru (retd.), Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, and Nasiru Sule Garo, Commissioner for Special Duties. Both officials expressed gratitude for the trust placed in them while pledging smooth handovers.
Other top resignations include Laminu Rabiu of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Hassan Danbappa of the Roads Maintenance Agency, and Shafa’atu Ahmed, Chief Governor’s Reporter. Several cited loyalty to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the NNPP as their reason for leaving, marking a realignment with the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
This political shift signals a new chapter in Kano State’s governance ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
