Australia Demands Trump Respect Afghan NATO Troops

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has condemned US President Donald Trump’s remarks downplaying NATO troops’ efforts in Afghanistan, calling them “completely unacceptable.” Trump had suggested allied forces “stayed a little back, a little off the front lines,” prompting outrage from European and Australian officials.

Albanese highlighted the sacrifice of 40,000 Australian troops, including 47 families who lost loved ones, stressing they were fully engaged on the frontlines defending democracy and national interests. He acknowledged Trump’s later statements praising UK troops but reiterated that the initial comments disrespected the bravery of Australia’s military.

The PM also announced Greg Moriarty as Australia’s next Ambassador to the United States, replacing Kevin Rudd, whose tenure had been marked by friction with Trump. Albanese described Moriarty as an “outstanding public servant” and confirmed consultations with the US administration for the posting.

The incident has further strained diplomatic sensitivities, underscoring the importance of respecting allied contributions in conflict zones.
