Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has rejected claims that the National Assembly is deliberately stalling the amendment of the Electoral Act 2022. His remarks came after former Vice President and PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, alleged that loopholes in the Act contributed to electoral malpractices in 2023 and warned of potential risks for 2027.
Speaking at his country home in Bende, Abia State, Kalu assured Nigerians that the House has completed its work on the amendment and is now awaiting the Senate to act concurrently. He emphasized that the National Assembly is committed to strengthening electoral processes and dismissed any notion of intentional delay, assuring the public that legislative action is in progress.
Kalu’s statement underscores the House’s position that reforming electoral laws remains a priority and that coordination with the Senate is the remaining step before finalizing the amendments.
