INEC Acted Late On Labour Party Crisis After Obi’s Exit – Rep Ogene

A member of the House of Representatives, Afam Ogene, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of deliberately delaying action on the Labour Party leadership crisis until after Peter Obi exited the party.

Speaking on Channels Television, Ogene questioned why INEC took over one year to recognise Senator Nenadi Usman as Labour Party chairman, despite stakeholders setting up an interim leadership as far back as September 2024.

He alleged that INEC contributed to the internal instability of the party by withholding recognition from the leadership structure agreed upon by party stakeholders in Umuahia. According to him, the timing of INEC’s action raised concerns, as the commission only acted after Obi’s departure.

Ogene argued that electoral institutions should remain neutral and timely in their decisions, stressing that delayed interventions can weaken political parties and undermine democratic processes. He maintained that INEC owed Nigerians an explanation for what he described as an avoidable delay.
