The Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN) has raised alarm over the ongoing demolition of homes in Makoko, Lagos, warning that the exercise is forcing vulnerable residents into homelessness.
HDAN Executive Director, Festus Adebayo, acknowledged the Lagos State Government’s claim that some structures were built under high-tension power lines, posing safety risks. However, he stressed that safety enforcement must not override the dignity and welfare of affected citizens.
Adebayo warned that demolitions without clear resettlement plans could deepen poverty, disrupt livelihoods and worsen social instability. He noted that Makoko supports thousands of low-income earners who depend on fishing, informal trade and small businesses for survival.
The housing advocacy group urged the government to suspend further demolitions and engage directly with the community. It also called for affordable alternative housing, compensation and resettlement frameworks that meet human rights standards, insisting that urban development must be humane and inclusive.
