EU Slams Trump’s Greenland Tariffs, Urgent Talks Held in Brussels

European Union leaders held emergency talks after US President Donald Trump announced 10% tariffs on imports from Denmark, France, Germany, and other EU nations over Greenland, calling the move “blackmail.” France proposed potential economic countermeasures, including restrictions on US access to public tenders and investments.

Cyprus, holding the EU presidency, convened ambassadors in Brussels while the bloc prioritized diplomacy over immediate retaliation. EU sources said the previously prepared €93 billion package of retaliatory tariffs could be revived if the US enforces the planned tariffs on February 1.

Danish PM Mette Frederiksen, German and Swedish leaders, and Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel condemned the US threats, emphasizing sovereignty and Arctic security. Italy described Trump’s move as a “mistake,” while the EU plans an extraordinary summit on January 22 to coordinate strategy. Officials stressed dialogue and unity to prevent transatlantic tensions from escalating further, though the anti-coercion “bazooka” remains on standby.
