Renowned political economist, Professor Pat Utomi, has outlined key actions he would take if he were Nigeria’s president, placing emphasis on reducing the high cost of governance.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Utomi said it was unjustifiable to run government at the expense of citizens already facing economic hardship. He stressed that governance costs in Nigeria remain excessively high and require urgent reduction.
Utomi explained that beyond cutting spending, his focus would be on using industrial policies to stimulate production and grow the economy. While supporting ongoing tax reforms, he noted that such revenues must not be treated as funds for unchecked government spending.
He also called for constitutional reforms to place strict limits on how public funds are spent, adding that Nigeria must embrace a balanced budget system. According to him, these measures are necessary to ease the burden on Nigerians and put the economy on a sustainable path.
