Plateau Illegal Mining: Deadly Hustle as Youths Risk Lives to Survive

Illegal mining has become a deadly means of survival for many youths in Plateau State, despite repeated mine collapses, bandit attacks and government restrictions. In recent months, dozens of miners have died in pit collapses and violent assaults across communities such as Dura, Bokkos and Barkin Ladi.

Official figures for 2025 put deaths from illegal mining-related incidents at over 50, though miners insist the toll is higher. Many blame unemployment, insecurity and poverty for pushing them into the risky trade.

In response, Governor Caleb Mutfwang signed Executive Order 001 of 2025, suspending all mining activities statewide to address security threats, environmental damage and illegal operations. However, mining continues openly in several areas, with thousands still flocking to sites like Kassa.

Miners say the danger is clear but unavoidable, insisting they would abandon the pits if viable jobs and safer livelihoods were available.
