Uganda Election Tension: Soldiers Seize Bobi Wine in Helicopter Raid

Ugandan opposition leader and presidential candidate, Bobi Wine, has been forcibly taken from his home by soldiers and flown away in a military helicopter, his party has confirmed. The incident occurred less than 24 hours after a controversial general election marked by violence, intimidation and a nationwide internet shutdown.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) said soldiers stormed Wine’s residence, assaulted his security aides and whisked him to an unknown location. Earlier, Wine had reported being under house arrest as security forces surrounded his compound.

The development comes as President Yoweri Museveni seeks to extend his nearly 40-year rule. Preliminary results released by Uganda’s Electoral Commission show Museveni leading with 73.7 per cent of votes, while Wine trails with 22.7 per cent, as counting continues.

Opposition figures also reported deadly raids on supporters, allegations the police have denied, further deepening concerns over democratic freedoms in Uganda.
