US Flags South Africa Over Iran’s Role In Naval Exercises

The United States has criticised South Africa for allowing Iran’s participation in ongoing naval exercises, calling it a threat to regional security.

In a statement via its official Twitter handle, @USEmbassySA, the US described Iran as a “destabilising actor and state sponsor of terror” and warned that its presence in joint exercises undermines maritime security. The statement also condemned South Africa for hosting Iranian security forces, highlighting Tehran’s ongoing human rights abuses, including suppression of peaceful political activity. The US added, “South Africa can’t lecture the world on ‘justice’ while cozying up to Iran.”

The criticism signals growing tension over South Africa’s defence engagement with Iran and raises questions about Pretoria’s adherence to international directives regarding security cooperation.
