FG, ASUU Strike Landmark Deal, Approve Salary Increase For Lecturers

The Federal Government has sealed a renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), approving a 40 per cent pay rise for university lecturers, effective January 1, 2026.

Presenting the agreement in Abuja, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the deal reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to stable academic calendars and quality education. Under the new structure, professors will earn an extra ₦1.8 million annually, while readers receive ₦840,000.

Alausa explained that the increase is captured through a consolidated academic tools allowance, covering research, publications, conferences and professional development. He also announced a new professorial credit allowance to support senior academics’ administrative and research duties.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Pinuwa, described the agreement as the outcome of years of stalled negotiations, while noting unresolved concerns around university autonomy. SSANU and NASU praised the deal but urged the government to fast-track negotiations with their unions to sustain industrial peace.
