A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dr Ladan Salihu, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing them as “excruciating” and deepening poverty across Nigeria. Speaking on ARISE News, Salihu said government claims of progress were disconnected from the daily struggles of citizens.
He cited data from the World Bank and Nigeria’s Bureau of Statistics, noting that multidimensional poverty has risen from about 43 per cent in 2014 to over 141 million Nigerians living in poverty today. According to him, policies such as fuel subsidy removal have worsened transportation costs and living expenses without adequate relief measures.
Salihu also questioned official claims of subsidy removal, referencing reports of trillions spent by NNPC to cover price gaps. He warned that macroeconomic statistics mean little if living standards continue to fall. He urged the government to confront the crisis honestly and prioritise citizens’ welfare over explanations and foreign engagements.
