Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has identified security checkpoints as the major cause of severe traffic congestion on Nigerian highways. In a statement shared on his X handle, Obi said his recent travels during the festive season exposed alarming gridlocks that forced many travellers to abandon their journeys.
According to him, most checkpoints are poorly positioned at narrow points and construction zones, bringing traffic to a standstill. He noted that the situation is widespread and has serious consequences on daily life, including wasted hours, driver fatigue, and increased road accidents.
While commending the sacrifices of security agencies, Obi stressed the need for better judgment, flexibility, and coordination, especially during peak travel periods. He warned that prolonged delays keep travellers on the road late into the night, exposing them to security risks.
Obi called for urgent reforms, urging authorities to reposition checkpoints, speed up inspections, and improve inter-agency coordination to enhance traffic flow without compromising security.
