The Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Auctioneers (NAA), Kano State chapter, Isah Deneji, has revealed that the state government is losing over ₦1 billion annually due to the non-auctioning of obsolete government property.
According to Deneji, items such as air conditioners, office furniture, roofing sheets, electronics, and interlocks, removed during massive renovations across ministries, are either left to rot or allegedly stolen and sold by unauthorized individuals instead of being formally auctioned.
He lamented that the government has sidelined licensed auctioneers despite their annual license renewals, leading to huge financial losses for the state treasury.
“The governor is doing a lot of renovations and construction, but the replaced items are not auctioned. They are stolen or wasted. Items worth about ₦1 billion are lost instead of being credited to the state account,” he warned.
Deneji urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to direct the Ministry of Finance to immediately resume auctioning of obsolete items to curb wastage and theft.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Works, Marwan Ahmad, distanced his ministry from the allegations, stressing that auctioning falls under the Ministry of Finance. He also confirmed that removed materials are often stored and recycled for other government projects.
However, stakeholders remain concerned that without formal auction procedures, government resources worth hundreds of millions will continue to vanish.
