Iran Protests Turn Deadly As Nationwide Clashes Intensify

Protests over rising living costs in Iran have turned deadly as violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces spread across several cities. At least six deaths were reported in western and southern Iran, according to local media and rights groups, as unrest entered its fifth day.

Fatal incidents were recorded in Lordegan, Azna and Kouhdasht, with conflicting claims over whether the victims were protesters or security personnel. Videos circulating online showed burning vehicles, street confrontations and chants against Iran’s clerical leadership. Some demonstrators also openly called for political change.

As tensions rose, clashes reportedly involved the Revolutionary Guards and Basij militia, while several security officers sustained injuries. Authorities ordered the closure of schools and public institutions nationwide, officially citing cold weather, a move many residents viewed as an effort to curb protests.

The unrest, triggered by the falling value of Iran’s currency, marks the most widespread demonstrations since 2022.
