Nine suspended members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have alleged that the state government and Assembly leadership have withheld their salaries and allowances for nearly two years following their suspension in February 2024.
The lawmakers claim they were targeted after raising concerns over insecurity in their constituencies. Bashir Abubakar, representing Bukkuyum North, said the group faced harassment and alleged attempts of arrest.
Aliyu Kagara added that budgets were passed without proper quorum, while their entitlements were allegedly shared among serving members. The Speaker, Bilyaminu Moriki, countered, stating the suspension resulted from breaches of legislative procedures, including locking the Assembly chamber during an unauthorised sitting, and denied that the withheld salaries were improper. The matter is now before the courts.
Governor Dauda Lawal reportedly offered reinstatement if the lawmakers submit an apology, which they have refused, keeping tensions high in the state legislature.
