The United States has announced a partial suspension of visa issuance to Nigerian nationals, effective January 1, 2026, citing border and national security concerns.
The decision follows Presidential Proclamation 10998 and affects nonimmigrant B-1/B-2 visitor visas, as well as F, M, and J student and exchange visitor visas. Certain immigrant visas are also impacted. Nigeria is among 19 countries listed under the new restrictions.
The US Mission in Nigeria clarified that the suspension applies only to applicants outside the United States who do not hold valid US visas as of the effective date. Existing visas issued before January 1, 2026, will not be revoked.
Exemptions include lawful permanent residents, dual nationals using non-listed passports, eligible special immigrant visa holders, and participants in major international sporting events.
Despite the announcement, Nigerians may still apply and attend interviews, though approval is not guaranteed under the new policy.
