The Senate has summoned Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo and major aviation stakeholders for an emergency session following nationwide outrage over the sharp increase in domestic flight fares. The move came after Senator Buhari Abdulfatai raised a motion warning that ticket prices—now between ₦400,000 and ₦600,000 for a one-way Abuja–Lagos trip—pose a serious threat to mobility as the festive season approaches.
Lawmakers condemned what they described as a 400% increase, calling it unacceptable and unsustainable for citizens already struggling with insecurity and unsafe road travel. Senators insisted that Nigeria’s failure to establish a national carrier worsens the crisis. While Senator Orji Kalu tried to justify airline operators by citing high operational costs, most lawmakers rejected the explanation.
The Senate has mandated Keyamo, regulators, and operators to appear before committees this week to explain the soaring fares and find urgent solutions.
