Ex-CDS Irabor Warns FG: “New Security Agencies Won’t Fix Nigeria’s Insecurity Crisis”

Former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, has cautioned the Federal Government against creating new security agencies, insisting that such moves will not solve Nigeria’s worsening insecurity. Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Irabor argued that existing agencies already struggle with manpower shortages, intelligence gaps, outdated equipment, and weak coordination.

He noted that without a deep, well-structured assessment of current security challenges, any new agency would inherit the same problems affecting the police, NSCDC, and others. Irabor emphasised that security reforms must go beyond public discussions, urging closed-door strategic evaluations to properly analyse and address gaps.

He also criticised the newly created Forest Guards, warning that they will fail if foundational issues remain unresolved. Irabor stressed that Nigeria must fix root causes, not multiply agencies, to prevent long-term damage to the military and overall security architecture.
