Detty December Warning: Eye Doctors Raise Alarm Over Deadly Methanol in Fake Drinks Across Nigeria

As Nigerians dive into the excitement of Detty December, health experts are raising a critical alarm about the growing circulation of methanol-adulterated alcoholic beverages and herbal aphrodisiacs. According to eye specialists, the rise in counterfeit drinks—especially unregulated bitters, manpower mixtures, herbal concoctions, and locally brewed spirits—is putting citizens at risk of sudden and permanent blindness.

Methanol, a toxic industrial chemical found in antifreeze and solvents, is sometimes added to fake drinks to boost profit. When consumed, it converts to formic acid, which rapidly attacks the optic nerve. Symptoms such as blurry vision, colour distortion, tunnel vision, or central dark spots can develop within 12–24 hours.

The festive season increases the circulation of these dangerous products at clubs, bars, roadside vendors, and house parties. Nigerians are urged to buy only NAFDAC-certified drinks and seek urgent medical care if methanol poisoning is suspected.
