Southern Governors Renew Push for State Police as Insecurity Deepens

Southern governors have again pressed for the creation of state police as insecurity continues to escalate across the region. The call was led by Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, during a meeting of southern governors held in Abeokuta on Wednesday.

Abiodun stressed that centrally controlled policing can no longer respond efficiently to rising threats, insisting that state police is now a non-negotiable pillar of true federalism. He also pushed for digital surveillance systems, intelligence-driven operations, and a regional Safe School Programme to curb attacks on schools.

The governors proposed a real-time intelligence-sharing platform across the 17 southern states, improved community policing, corridor surveillance for highways and rail lines, and a Regional Rapid Response Fund for emergencies.

Beyond security, Abiodun urged a coordinated development agenda focusing on digital innovation, agriculture, mineral resources, and massive regional industrialisation.
