Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and other high-profile African election observers have been stranded in Guinea-Bissau following a sudden military coup on Wednesday. Jonathan was part of a 36-member joint observer mission deployed by the AU, ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum to monitor the recent presidential election.
The coup erupted after incumbent President Umaro Embaló and his main challenger, Fernando Dias, separately declared victory despite the absence of official results from the electoral commission. In response, the military shut land borders, sealed airports, and blocked national entry and exit points, grounding movement across the country.
The joint mission condemned the development as a major setback, noting that both candidates had previously assured them of their commitment to accept the people’s decision. Observers have called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and the release of detained officials.
