Nigeria’s Power Supply Drops Again as NERC Reveals Only 40% Plant Availability in October

Nigeria’s persistent power crisis deepened in October as new NERC data showed only 5,506MW of the country’s 13,625MW installed capacity reached consumers — barely 40% availability. Despite this, October recorded a slight 2% improvement from September.

The bulk of the month’s output came from 10 major hydro and gas plants, including Egbin, Delta, Kainji, Shiroro, Okpai, and Geregu, which collectively supplied 80% of total generation. Yet, the sector still struggled, generating only 4,290MWh/h, reflecting a stagnant 78% load factor.

Plants such as Zungeru achieved 100% availability but produced modest output, while others like Rivers I and Okpai II failed to generate any power. Grid instability also worsened, with voltage and frequency levels breaching safety thresholds.

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu reiterated that Nigeria’s grid can transmit up to 8,500MW but blamed the current 5,000MW levels on poor alignment between demand and consumption.
