REPORTAGE: Tension in Maiduguri School as Night Panic Sends Students Running

A sudden wave of panic gripped Government Girls College, Maiduguri, on Monday night as students fled their hostels, claiming they saw “men in black with face masks” within the school premises.

The incident occurred at about 8:25 pm, sending hundreds of terrified girls rushing into nearby streets, many still in nightwear and hostel clothing. Security personnel were immediately deployed to restore order.

According to Dauda Illiya, spokesperson for the Borno State Governor, the situation was swiftly contained. He urged the public to remain calm and ignore circulating rumours.
In his words, posted on Facebook: “Security agencies were immediately deployed and have successfully restored order.”

A video shared by Amos Adziba, a Facebook user, captured the tense moment students stampeded out of the school. One frightened girl claimed masked men entered the hostels while they were praying in the mosque, pleading with authorities to allow them return home “so they won’t be kidnapped like the Chibok girls.”

Amos also appealed to top security officials in the state to intervene urgently to avoid “hearing bad news.”

However, the police have since described the alarm as false.

In a statement titled “False Alarm on Alleged Attack at Government Girls College, Maiduguri,” Police Public Relations Officer ASP Nahum Daso explained that investigations revealed the scare started when some students thought they saw figures behind the fence near the staff quarters.
This triggered a brief stampede, but no injuries were recorded.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Garba Audu Bosso, led officers to the site for an immediate assessment, while the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information capable of heightening tension.

Police authorities say normalcy has been fully restored and further updates will be provided when necessary.
