“Lagos–Calabar Highway: FG Sets December Opening for First Section”

The Federal Government has announced plans to open the completed portion of Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to motorists between December 12 and 17, marking a major milestone in the 700-km project linking Lagos to Calabar.

Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, revealed this during an inspection tour on Sunday, noting that Section 1 is just two kilometres away from full completion and will be formally commissioned in April 2026. A total of 47.37 kilometres was assessed during the inspection.

Umahi explained that select areas of the construction were intentionally slowed to allow proper subsoil settlement, ensuring durability and long-term structural integrity. He praised Hitech Construction for its “uncommon commitment,” adding that the project’s foreign loan component was oversubscribed by $100 million—an indication of investor confidence.

Hitech Managing Director, Danny Aboud, confirmed that sand filling across swamp zones is progressing, with 34 to 35 kilometres of reinforced concrete pavement already completed.

Other inspected sites included the 25-km Eleko–Ibeju Lekki–Ijebu Ode dual carriageway and the massive flyover at Chainage 47.474, designed to connect Sections 1 and 2. With 80% of piling work done, the interchange is scheduled for completion in Q1 2026.

Umahi also announced the upcoming President Tinubu Engineering Mentorship Programme, set to begin in January. The initiative will recruit engineers and technicians nationwide, offering hands-on training across major federal projects, with start-up support provided on completion to strengthen Nigeria’s indigenous engineering capacity.
