The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared that internet fraudsters, popularly called Yahoo Boys, are inflicting deeper harm on Nigeria’s economy than any other group. EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale made the statement while stressing that the anti-corruption fight must be collective and inclusive.
According to him, cyber fraud continues to destabilize the economy and undermine development nationwide. He emphasized that internet criminals are now responsible for significant economic losses affecting businesses, investments, and international credibility.
The comment has triggered widespread discussions on social media, where many Nigerians questioned why the EFCC focuses heavily on cybercrime while high-profile political corruption appears unaddressed.
A viral comment by a user, @Victorcrown17, argued that the government must fix unemployment, education, electricity, and systemic corruption before condemning young people drawn into fraud.
