Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar, Burna Boy, has once again set social media abuzz after declaring that Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is the only African artist greater than him.
The “City Boys” crooner made the controversial remark during a livestream chat with Australian streamer Playboymax, where he confidently described Fela as the undisputed king of African music.
“He [Fela Kuti] is the king. He is the only one [African artist] who is greater than me. He is the only one,” Burna Boy said with conviction.
The statement immediately triggered mixed reactions online, dividing music lovers across the continent.
While some fans applauded Burna Boy for acknowledging Fela’s legendary influence, others accused him of arrogance and self-glorification, arguing that several African icons — including Angelique Kidjo, Youssou N’Dour, and 2Baba — also deserve equal reverence.
Music critics note that Burna Boy’s confidence has long been part of his brand, with the Afro-fusion star often positioning himself as the heir to Fela’s musical throne.
Despite the controversy, Burna Boy continues to dominate global music charts and headline sold-out shows across major cities, reinforcing his status as one of Africa’s biggest international exports.
