Fire Guts Alaba International Market, Traders Count Millions in Losses

A massive fire outbreak has destroyed goods worth millions of naira at the popular Alaba International Market in Lagos on Tuesday night, October 21.

Eyewitnesses said the inferno started late in the night, sending traders into panic as thick smoke covered the skyline. Videos circulating online showed helpless shop owners watching as their hard-earned goods were consumed by the flames.

Although the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, emergency teams from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly to the distress call and battled through the night to bring the situation under control.

The Alaba International Market, located along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, is one of Nigeria’s biggest trading hubs for electronics, appliances, and building materials. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but many traders are feared to have lost everything.
