The Nigerian military has launched a high-level investigation into an alleged coup plot involving about 20 officers accused of planning to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.
Reports indicate that the initial arrests began in late September when 16 officers — including a Brigadier General and a Colonel — were detained after intelligence suggested they were holding secret meetings to discuss a possible military takeover.
According to sources quoted by Premium Times, additional arrests have been made since then, with the suspects accused of plotting to assassinate top government officials as part of their alleged “bloody coup” plan. The leaked plot reportedly caused panic within government circles and led to the cancellation of the October 1st Independence Day parade.
A senior military source revealed that the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) swiftly moved to avert chaos after intelligence agencies intercepted communications hinting at a coup timeline. “The plot triggered immediate concern at the highest levels of power. The military hierarchy had earlier pledged loyalty to President Tinubu, so the leak prompted urgent containment measures,” the source said.
The military high command has since formed an investigative panel comprising representatives from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, and the State Security Service (SSS) to probe the officers’ alleged “indiscipline and breach of service regulations.”
Although the DHQ has not officially confirmed the coup allegations, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, its spokesperson, stated that the officers are being investigated for misconduct and violation of military rules.
The arrested officers are reportedly being held at a secure military facility in Abuja pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. DHQ insists the probe aims to maintain discipline and professionalism within the Armed Forces while addressing grievances related to stalled promotions and career progression.
Despite the growing tension, the Defence Headquarters continues to deny that the Independence Day parade cancellation was linked to any coup attempt, urging Nigerians to remain calm as investigations proceed.
