India Clinches Hosting Rights for 2030 Commonwealth Games Ahead of Nigeria

India has officially been announced as the host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, defeating Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, after a highly competitive bidding process.

The Commonwealth Sport Executive Board made the announcement on Wednesday, confirming Ahmedabad, located in the western state of Gujarat, as the chosen host city. The decision will be formally ratified at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26.

This victory marks India’s return to hosting the Commonwealth Games for the first time since Delhi 2010, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Commonwealth Games — a symbolic milestone for the sporting community.

Ahmedabad’s strong bid was backed by its world-class infrastructure, particularly the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest sports arena globally, with a seating capacity of 132,000. The city, home to over five million residents, has become a prominent hub for international sporting events and is even being considered for future Olympic bids.

Reacting to the announcement, Dr. P. T. Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, expressed pride and optimism, saying the Games would serve as “a unifying symbol for the nation and an inspiration for the youth.”
