Ghana’s Black Stars have officially booked their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a hard-fought 1–0 win over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, thanks to a crucial strike from Mohammed Kudus.
The Tottenham midfielder scored just two minutes into the second half, slotting home from close range after a goalmouth scramble that the Comoros defence failed to clear.
The victory crowned Ghana as Group I winners with 25 points from 10 matches, securing their place among Africa’s representatives at the 2026 global showpiece, alongside Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia.
The match carried emotional significance for Ghana, who were seeking revenge after Comoros shocked them at the 2022 AFCON and defeated them again in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers. But on this night, the Black Stars stood tall before a jubilant 40,000-capacity home crowd.
The qualification marks Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance, their best run being in 2010, when they narrowly lost to Uruguay in the quarter-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout.
This triumph also marks a turnaround for coach Otto Addo, who was under intense pressure last year after Ghana’s poor AFCON qualifying campaign, where they failed to win any of their six matches.
Elsewhere in Africa, Egypt claimed a 1–0 victory over Guinea-Bissau without star player Mohamed Salah, while Niger stunned Zambia to move into contention for the playoff rounds. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Super Eagles safely returned to Uyo after their aircraft made an emergency landing in Angola due to a cracked windscreen.
With just two matchdays remaining, the final automatic African qualifiers will be decided this week, with Benin, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, and Senegal currently topping their respective groups.
