“I Just Wanted to Protect My Grandson” — 60-Year-Old Man Robs Supermarket to Get Jailed With Grandson

In a shocking yet emotional twist of events, a 60-year-old man from Guadeloupe, a French overseas region, robbed a supermarket not for money — but to be imprisoned alongside his grandson.

The strange incident took place in Sainte-Rose, northern Guadeloupe, leaving both locals and the police in disbelief.

Retired Firefighter Turned Unlikely Robber

According to reports, the elderly man, a retired firefighter with no criminal record, walked into a supermarket near a police station wearing a balaclava and holding a weapon.

He demanded cash from the cashier but also took a piece of Emmental cheese and a bottle of wine before quietly heading back to his car.

Minutes later, police arrested him without any resistance — exactly as he had planned.

Why He Did It: “To Be With My Grandson”

Investigations later revealed that the man’s motive was far from criminal. His lawyer, Léa Le Chevillier, told AFP that her client only wanted to be imprisoned to protect his grandson, who is already serving time.

During a recent visit to the prison, the man reportedly found his grandson in distress, bullied by other inmates and even injured, with a broken tooth.

“He wasn’t interested in money. He only wanted to be in prison to comfort his grandson and spend time with him,” said his lawyer.

Judge Chooses Compassion Over Punishment

In court, the man immediately confessed to the robbery. While he faced serious charges including armed robbery and assault, the judge described the case as “completely unprecedented.”

Considering his clean record and emotional motive, the court showed mercy. He was spared jail time but ordered to:

  • Pay compensation to the supermarket
  • Undergo psychological therapy
  • Stay away from the shopping centre

He was also granted official permission to continue visiting his grandson — this time, without committing a crime.

The emotional story has since gone viral, sparking debates about justice, love, and family loyalty.
