Delta Man Flees After Alleged Incest Incident

A Nigerian father is currently evading authorities after allegedly impregnating his daughter in Otulu, Delta State.

Activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who brought the incident to light online, stated that the victim, now pregnant with her father’s child, is safe and under the care of his non-governmental organization.

Legal Implications

Incest, involving sexual relations between close blood relatives, is a serious criminal offense under Nigerian law. According to Sections 214 and 390 of the Criminal Code Act, applicable in Southern Nigeria, incest is a felony punishable by up to seven years in prison. If the victim is under 18, the charges may escalate to defilement or rape, which could result in a life imprisonment sentence under Section 218 of the Criminal Code or Section 31 of the Child Rights Act.

Call for Justice

Harrison urged authorities to swiftly arrest and prosecute the suspect to ensure justice for the survivor and safeguard other potential victims.

He also noted that the survivor and her children are receiving support and temporary shelter through a volunteer network.
